FRC Team 329 strives to bridge the gender gap in STEM and robotics fields. It has been a goal of ours to encourage high school girls to participate in FIRST Robotics. We expanded on this goal, reaching grades 6 through 8 in the Patchogue Medford School District. We currently have 15 girls contributing to our team and every year that number continues to grow. We hope that by introducing STEM seminars to younger girls, not only will our numbers increase more rapidly, but female participation in district Jr. FLL, FLL, and STEM related clubs will be more prominent. The girls were separated into 4 groups and rotated between 4 robotics related stations. Each station was lead by female team leaders who held engaging activities that taught basic STEM principles:
3D Modeling - 45 minutes
Electrical- 45 minutes
Mechanical- 45 minutes
Software- 45 minutes
Nearly 100 middle school girls joined us over three Saturdays to expand their knowledge of STEM.
100% of the girls were more interested in STEM after the seminar than they were before.
100% of attendees said they will be joining us for next year’s seminar.
Only 37% of the girls wanted to go into STEM fields before the seminar, now over 90% of them are looking into a STEM oriented career.
