FIRST Team 329 brought STEM into the hands of the children throughout Patchogue - Medford by distributing lego kits into each and every elementary classroom in our district. We created Junior Engineering Guides specific to each grade level in order to teach students problem solving skills, develop their creativity and allow them to get practice with working as a team.
Development and Design
Step 1 - Youth Creativity Development - When allowed to use their creativity skills and imagination, kindergarteners and first graders excel in working as a team all while having fun. The Step 1 Guides simply ask students to create a model with no limits. Step 2 - Requirement Based Creativity - Designed for second and third graders, this step still allows creative leeway for students, however, they are introduced to various limits and factors that require them to think about their design before executing a model. Some limits include size, quantity, and orientation of the model. Step 3- Advance Problem Solving - Fourth and fifth graders will be faced with a series of challenges. They will need to dig deep into the question, develop a solution, and successfully execute their plan.
Expansion of the Program
Since last year, we have developed two to six new complex challenges for each grade that utilize wheels. This was done in order to make the movement of creations a significant component of the Junior Engineering Program. As a result of our district’s large spanish speaking population, we devoted several weeks to translating our guides into Spanish. We are now able to more effectively expose a wider range of students to this program, and allow the children in Spanish-speaking classrooms to enjoy our challenges!
